Shimpo RK 3D Pottery Wheel: Brushless direct drive for powerful, silent operation

The RK 3D is Shimpo's answer to the question of what a professional wheel looks like without wear parts: no drive belts, no brushes, no manual belt tensioning. A brushless DC direct drive delivers constant, high torque across the entire speed range, so the speed does not drop, even when centering up to 45 kg of clay. Unlike its big sister, the RK 3E, the RK 3D stands firmly on its legs without height adjustment; in return, it is more affordable and has been known in studios for years for its low maintenance requirements.

Why the RK 3D is the right choice

Anyone who works at a wheel daily immediately notices the difference compared to belt-driven models: without belts and pulleys, there are no vibrations and nothing to loosen over time. The direct drive responds immediately to the foot pedal, right up to an instant stop without coasting. The fixed, non-height-adjustable leg design is intentionally kept simple: fewer moving parts, a reason why Shimpo wheels in training facilities often run continuously for years without needing adjustment.

Features & Benefits

  • Brushless direct drive: no belts, no vibration, exceptionally quiet operation.
  • 45 kg centering capacity: constant torque even with large amounts of clay.
  • Instant stop: The wheel stops upon releasing the pedal without coasting.
  • Dual function: The wheel head can rotate freely when the motor is off, serving as a banding wheel for decorating or glazing.
  • Built-in circuit breaker for overload protection.
  • Reversible: Clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation selectable.

Suitable accessories

For an ergonomic seating position at the wheel, simply select “With stool” above: a height-adjustable potter’s stool (seat height 48 to 66 cm, washable plastic seat).

For flexible work with large and small pieces, select “With bat system” above in addition: a Ø 300 mm bat system (255 mm hole pattern, suitable for Shimpo) incl. base plate, insert plates in 100/150/200 mm, and adapters for tool-free changing of the work surface without deforming the piece.

Important: The bat system requires a wheel head with pins.

  • When buying new: Select "With pins" above, a factory conversion (drilling, 2 pins with wing nuts, and a matching MDF plate) that retrofits the existing wheel head.
  • For a wheel already purchased: Use our cast light metal wheel head in the "With pins and MDF plate" version for direct replacement, without any workshop visit.

Other suitable options include the Lindemann bat systems as well as the plastic bat system inserts and the interchangeable discs, each with the standard hole pattern suitable for Shimpo (254 mm / 2 pins).

Practical studio accessories: The vessel lifter makes it easier to remove freshly thrown pieces from the wheel head, the clay centering tool assists with clean clay centering. For a replacement or second pan, select the version matching your model from our splash pan options.

Which Shimpo wheel is right for me?

If you would like to be able to adjust the seat height for different users or need more surface area for larger pieces, the identical RK 3E with height-adjustable legs and a 350 mm wheel head is the more suitable variant. If a lower centering capacity of 12 kg at a significantly lower price is sufficient, take a look at the belt-driven RK 55. The particularly quiet Whisper T is also worth comparing if 300 W is enough for you.
