General questions about pottery
How moist does clay need to be when working with it?
Clay should be soft, supple, and malleable when working with it, without being sticky. Immediately after opening the packaging, it usually has the ideal moisture level for modeling or throwing. It should feel elastic and be kneadable without cracking.
If the clay is too dry, cracks will quickly form during shaping. If it is too wet, however, it loses stability and fine details will blur. For more precise work or attaching individual parts, a slightly firmer, so-called leather-hard state is suitable, in which the clay retains its shape well but can still be worked.
Should the clay become too dry, you can lightly spray it with water, wrap it in plastic film, and let it rest for a few hours so that the moisture distributes evenly. If it is too damp, it helps to leave it out in the open for a while or place it on a plaster slab, which will absorb the excess water.
Can I mix different types of clay together?
In principle, you can mix different types of clay together. However, it is important that they have similar properties. The firing temperature and shrinkage behavior are particularly crucial. If these differ significantly, it can lead to cracks or stress during drying or firing.
It is best to only mix clays that are suitable for the same firing range, for example, two stoneware clays with similar temperature ratings. Texture also plays a role. A very coarsely grogged clay behaves differently than a fine, smooth clay. Mixing these can alter the surface and stability.
Before using them for larger projects, we recommend making a small test sample and letting it dry and fire completely. This way, you can see how the mixture behaves and whether the result meets your expectations.
How do I store opened clay properly so that it does not dry out?
Opened clay should always be packed airtight so that it retains its moisture. It is best to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap first or place it in a sturdy plastic bag, squeezing out as much air as possible. You can then additionally store it in a well-sealing bucket or box.
It is important that the clay is stored in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Heat accelerates drying. If you notice the clay becoming a bit firmer, you can lightly spray it with water, seal it airtight again, and let it rest for a few hours so that the moisture distributes evenly.
Stored this way, clay usually remains easy to work with for many weeks, often even months.
Which simple projects are particularly suitable for beginners?
For getting started with pottery, projects that don't require a potter's wheel and can be easily built by hand are ideal. This helps you get a feel for the material and learn how clay behaves when being shaped and dried.
🟤 Bowls and small dishes
Simple bowls can be formed very easily using the pinch pot technique or from a slab of clay. They are forgiving of minor imperfections and are perfect for gaining your first experience with wall thickness and consistent workmanship.
🟤 Mugs without handles
A simple mug or drinking cup is ideal for beginners. You can roll it from a slab of clay and assemble it, or model it freehand. This allows you to practice joining seams and smoothing surfaces.
🟤 Candle holders
Small candle holders are quick to make and don't require much material. At the same time, you can experiment with shapes and patterns.
🟤 Small plates or coasters
Flat shapes are especially beginner-friendly. Here, you will learn how important even rolling and clean trimming are.
Our tip: Start with small projects and take your time with the drying process. Especially at the beginning, patience is the key to beautiful results.
How can I decorate pottery pieces even without glaze?
Even without glaze, you can embellish your pottery in a variety of ways. As long as the clay is still soft, you can press textures and patterns into it using stamps, fabrics, leaves, or simple tools, giving every piece a personal touch.
Lines, geometric shapes, or small lettering add further individuality. Another option is using engobes—colored clay slip—to add color to your pieces before firing. This creates matte, natural surfaces with a subtle color effect. Burnishing the clay in a leather-hard state also looks particularly refined. This involves compressing the surface with a smooth stone or spoon to create a silky, slight sheen without any glaze at all.
In addition, you can work with different types of colored clay to create natural contrasts. This way, you can produce individual, characterful pieces with an authentic, handmade look.
Can I use clay without a kiln?
Yes, there are special clays that do not require a kiln. Air-dry clay hardens at room temperature and is wonderful for decorative objects, small bowls, or figurines. Oven-bake clay can also be cured in a standard kitchen oven, which makes it sturdier. It is important to know: these clays are not waterproof and therefore not suitable for dishes or vases that you want to use with water. If you want to create functional ceramics, such as mugs, plates, or storage containers, you will eventually need a kiln.
Can I fire clay at home in a normal oven?
No, clay cannot be fired in a standard household oven. A kitchen oven usually reaches a maximum of 250 degrees Celsius, whereas firing ceramics requires temperatures between approximately 900 and 1,300 degrees Celsius, depending on the type of clay. Only at these high temperatures does the clay sinter, becoming permanently hard and water-resistant.
In an oven, the clay would therefore not harden properly, but merely dry out. The piece would remain brittle and would dissolve or become damaged upon contact with water.
If you do pottery at home, you can have your pieces fired after they have dried at a pottery workshop, an open studio, or a ceramic service. Many studios offer a firing service for external work. Read more about it here: Can you fire clay in a regular oven?
Do I need a lot of space to start pottery at home?
No, you don’t need a large space to start pottery. To begin with, a sturdy table or desk is perfectly sufficient. What’s most important is a surface that is easy to wipe clean and enough space to have your tools and clay within reach.
If you are hand-building, you need very little equipment and can easily work in the kitchen or a study. Make sure to protect your workspace well, for example with a washable mat, and have a container of water and a cloth for cleaning ready.
Additionally, you should plan for a quiet spot where your pieces can dry undisturbed and slowly. This could be a shelf, a sideboard, or simply a protected corner. So, for starters, pottery is much more space-efficient than many think.
How much can you earn with pottery?
The income of a potter depends heavily on whether it is practiced as a hobby, a side job, or a full-time profession.
- Hobby potters sometimes sell individual pieces at markets or online. Depending on the effort and quality, you can charge between 15 and 40 euros for a mug, and significantly more for bowls or vases. The profit then depends on how many pieces you produce and sell.
- On a part-time basis, you can earn a few hundred euros a month if you regularly attend markets or run your own Etsy shop or online store.
- Professional ceramicists with their own studio, a loyal customer base, and course offerings can certainly make a living from their work. In addition to selling ceramic pieces, pottery classes are an important source of income, as many people want to try their hand at the craft.
Bottom line: you generally won't get rich from pottery, but you can build a solid income if you combine creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Which basic tools should I get at the beginning?
For getting started with pottery, a small starter set is completely sufficient. This includes:
- Cutting wire for cutting blocks of clay or removing pieces from the table
- Wood or metal tools for shaping the clay
- Loop tools for removing excess clay
- Needle tool, ideal for scratching patterns or testing wall thickness
- Sponge for smoothing the surface and regulating moisture
With this basic set, you can already complete a wide variety of projects. You can expand your equipment later with specialized tools, a potter's wheel, and glazes.
Do you have any tips on where I can store my pottery equipment if I don't have any space in my apartment?
Idea: Use your basement, storage room, balcony with a weatherproof box, or an affordable self-storage unit. Stackable bins also help to store everything compactly.
Also a good option if your house has a garden: a mini-garage, e.g., a walker or wheelchair garage. Take a look at the websites of Deutsche Rollatorgaragen or Rollator Experten – the models there are weatherproof, ventilated, and lockable.
How long does it take for a pottery piece to be finished?
The duration depends heavily on the technique and the material. With air-dry clay, you must let your piece dry for at least 24 to 72 hours before you can paint or further process it. When working with a kiln, the process takes significantly longer: First, the piece dries slowly in the air (several days to a week, depending on size). This is usually followed by two firing cycles – the bisque firing and the glaze firing. In total, it can easily take 1–2 weeks from initial shaping to the finished ceramic piece. Patience is therefore important in pottery – but you will be rewarded with unique and long-lasting results.
