Amaco KI-68 Honey Crystal

Honey Crystal from Amaco's Kiln Ice series is a warm, golden stoneware glaze in a buttery yellow shade. It is characterized by a fine network of crazing (so-called crackle), which is reminiscent of traditional Guan or snowflake glazes. The glaze is semi-transparent, but becomes slightly opaque at the cracks, creating a fascinating, multi-layered visual structure.

Amaco's Kiln Ice glazes create unique ice crystal patterns through targeted tension differences with the clay body, which particularly highlight shapes, edges, and contours. They form a fine, ice-like texture and are ideal for decorative ceramics.

Honey Crystal unfolds its full effect particularly well on brown or dark clay bodies (without manganese) or in combination with brown underglazes.

Properties

  • Manufacturer: Amaco
  • Series: Kiln Ice (KI)
  • Color code: KI-68
  • Name: Honey Crystal
  • Content: 472 ml (pint)
  • Color: Warm golden yellow / buttery yellow
  • Glaze type: Stoneware glaze / crackle glaze / brushing glaze
  • Surface: Glossy, with a fine crackle network
  • Special feature: Delayed crazing – the full pattern often develops only 1–2 days after firing
  • Visual effect depends on application thickness and selected clay body
  • Safe for Spray Application
  • Officially "Food Safe," but not recommended by AMACO for dinnerware due to the crackle fissures

Application

  • Apply to ceramics bisqued at Cone 04
  • Application: Apply 3–4 thick coats with a brush (multiple brushed layers are better than a single thick layer)
  • Glaze thickness determines pattern size: Thinner application results in smaller, tighter patterns; thicker application results in larger, hexagonal patterns
  • Handle ware carefully before firing to avoid chipping at the edges
  • Recommendation: Preferably glaze both inside and outside to avoid dunting
  • Leave some clay unglazed (e.g., base or drip ring) to allow gases to escape and minimize pin-holing
  • Shake well and stir thoroughly before use

Technical Specifications

  • Firing range: approx. 1184 °C to 1241 °C (Cone 5 to 6)
  • Suitable for stoneware firing (particularly effective on brown/dark clay without manganese such as AMACO 30M, 32M, or 46M)

Ceramic glazes are raw materials for ceramic processing and must be used and fired according to the manufacturer's instructions. Results may vary depending on the clay, firing curve, and kiln atmosphere. We recommend conducting your own firing tests under your specific studio conditions before application.

Safety data sheets with information on chemical composition and safe handling are available from the manufacturer.
