Amaco CR-18 Speckled Flux Crawl

Speckled Flux Crawl from Amaco's Crawls series is a glossy, soft pink glaze with black speckles, specifically designed for layering. During firing, it crawls into organic shapes, adding color variations to the underlying glaze. This creates a unique, multi-layered effect with subtle depth.

The Crawls glazes utilize an effect traditionally considered a defect: glaze crawling. During firing, the glaze pulls away, revealing the glaze layer underneath. Each firing thus produces a unique, spontaneous result.

Speckled Flux Crawl is particularly effective when layered over other glazes, such as those in the Amaco Celadon series, where it creates depth and contrast.

Properties

  • Manufacturer: Amaco
  • Series: Crawls (CR)
  • Color code: CR-18
  • Name: Speckled Flux Crawl
  • Content: 472 ml
  • Color: Soft pink with black speckles, iridescent over the underlying glaze
  • Glaze type: Stoneware glaze / brushing glaze, crawl or effect glaze
  • Finish: Glossy, crawling texture with raised patterns
  • Especially suitable for layering over other glazes
  • Application thickness controls the pattern: more layers result in larger shapes and more cracks; thinner application creates a finer beaded effect

Application

  • Apply 1 to 4 coats to bisque fired at Cone 04
  • Brushing glaze, apply with a brush
  • Allow each coat to dry almost completely before applying the next
  • For better adhesion, apply a thin coat of AMACO Gum Solution to the bisque before application
  • For greater durability, apply over an Amaco Celadon glaze or an underglaze before firing
  • The dried glaze forms fine hairline cracks and is fragile; handle pieces carefully before firing
  • Due to natural raw material variations, always fire a test piece with each new batch number
  • Shake well and stir thoroughly before use

Technical Data

  • Firing range: approx. 1186 °C to 1222 °C (Cone 5 to 6)
  • Suitable for stoneware firing

Note on food safety

Crawls glazes are not food-safe when applied alone. If applied over an Amaco Celadon glaze, they are considered food-safe. For tableware and surfaces in contact with food, we therefore recommend always using Crawls over a Celadon glaze.

Ceramic glazes are raw materials for ceramic processing and must be used and fired according to the manufacturer's instructions. Results may vary depending on the clay, firing curve, and kiln atmosphere. We recommend conducting your own firing tests under your specific studio conditions before application.

Safety data sheets with information on chemical composition and safe handling are available from the manufacturer.
