General questions about pottery

How moist does clay need to be when working with it?

Clay should be soft, pliable, and easily workable during processing, without being sticky. Immediately after opening the packaging, it usually has the ideal moisture content for modeling or throwing. It should feel elastic and be kneadable without cracking.

If the clay is too dry, cracks will quickly form during shaping. If, on the other hand, it is too wet, it loses stability and fine details will blur. For more precise work or attaching individual parts, a slightly firmer, so-called leather-hard state is suitable, where the clay holds its shape well but can still be worked.

If the clay happens to be too dry, you can lightly spray it with water, wrap it in foil, and let it rest for a few hours so that the moisture distributes evenly. If it is too wet, leaving it exposed for a while or placing it on a plaster slab, which draws out excess water, will help.

Can I mix different types of clay together?

In principle, you can mix different types of clay. However, it is important that they have similar properties. The firing temperature and shrinkage behavior are particularly crucial. If these differ significantly, cracks or stresses can occur during drying or firing.

It is best to only mix clays that are suitable for the same firing range, for example, two stoneware clays with similar temperature specifications. The structure also plays a role. A very coarse grog clay behaves differently from a fine, smooth clay. Mixing can change the surface and stability here.

Before using it for larger projects, we recommend making a small sample and letting it dry and fire completely. This way, you can see how the mixture behaves and whether the result meets your expectations.

How do I properly store opened clay so that it doesn't dry out?

Opened clay should always be stored airtight to retain its moisture. The best way is to first wrap it tightly in cling film or place it in a sturdy plastic bag and press out as much air as possible. Afterwards, you can store it additionally in a well-sealing bucket or box.

It is important that the clay is stored in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. Heat accelerates drying out. If you notice that the clay is becoming a little firmer, you can lightly spray it with water, re-wrap it airtight, and let it rest for a few hours so that the moisture is evenly distributed.

Stored this way, clay usually remains workable for many weeks, often even months.

Which simple projects are particularly suitable for beginners?

For beginners in pottery, projects that don't require a potter's wheel and can be easily built by hand are suitable. This way, you'll get a feel for the material and learn how clay behaves during shaping and drying.

🟤 Bowls and small dishes

Simple bowls can be easily formed using the pinch pot technique or from a slab of clay. They forgive small imperfections and are perfect for gaining initial experience with wall thickness and working consistently.

🟤 Mugs without handles

A plain mug or drinking cup is ideal for beginners. You can roll it from a clay slab and assemble it, or model it freely. This allows you to practice joining seams and smoothing surfaces.

🟤 Candle holders

Small candle holders are quick to make and don't require much material. At the same time, you can experiment with shapes and patterns.

🟤 Small plates or coasters

Flat shapes are particularly beginner-friendly. Here you'll learn the importance of even rolling and clean cutting.

Our tip: Start with small projects and take your time with drying. Especially at the beginning, patience is the key to beautiful results.

How can I decorate pottery pieces without glaze?

Even without glaze, you can decorate your pottery in many ways. As long as the clay is still soft, you can impress textures and patterns with stamps, fabrics, leaves, or simple tools, giving each piece a personal touch.

Lines, geometric shapes, or small inscriptions provide additional individuality. Another option is engobes, which are colored clay slips you can use to color your pieces before firing. This creates matte, natural surfaces with a subtle color effect. Polishing the leather-hard clay also creates a particularly elegant look. This involves compacting the surface with a smooth stone or spoon, resulting in a silky, slight sheen, all without glaze.

Furthermore, you can work with differently colored clays to create natural contrasts. This way, you can create individual, characterful pieces with an authentic, handmade look.

Can I use clay without a kiln?

Yes, there are special clays that don't require a kiln. Air-dry clay hardens at room temperature and is perfect for decorative objects, small bowls, or figurines. Oven-hardening clay can also be fired in a regular kitchen kiln, making it stronger. It's important to note: These clays aren't waterproof and therefore not suitable for tableware or vases that you intend to use with water. If you want to create functional ceramics, like cups, plates, or storage containers, you'll need a kiln in the long run.

Can I fire clay at home in a regular oven?

No, clay cannot be fired in a regular household oven. A kitchen oven typically reaches a maximum of 250 degrees Celsius, but firing ceramics requires temperatures between approximately 900 and 1,300 degrees Celsius, depending on the type of clay. Only at these high temperatures does the clay sinter, becoming permanently hard and water-resistant.

In a kitchen oven, the clay would therefore not harden properly; it would merely dry. The piece would remain brittle and would dissolve or be damaged upon contact with water.

If you are potting at home, you can have your dried creations fired at a pottery studio, an open workshop, or through a ceramic service. Many studios offer firing services for external work. You can find more information here: Can clay be fired in a regular oven?

Do I need a lot of space to start pottery at home?

No, you don't need a large space to start pottery. A sturdy table or desk is perfectly sufficient to begin with. The most important things are a surface that is easy to wipe clean and some space to keep your tools and clay within reach.

If you're hand-building, you'll only need a little equipment and can easily work in the kitchen or study. Make sure to protect your workspace well, for example with a washable mat, and have a container of water and a cloth ready for cleaning.

Additionally, you should plan for a quiet spot where your pieces can dry undisturbed and slowly. This could be a shelf, a sideboard, or simply a protected corner. So, getting started with pottery requires significantly less space than many people think.

How much can you earn as a potter?

A potter's income depends heavily on whether it is pursued as a hobby, a side job, or as a main occupation.

  • Hobby potters sometimes sell individual pieces at markets or online. Depending on the effort and quality, you can charge between 15 and 40 euros for a cup, and considerably more for bowls or vases. Your profit then depends on how many pieces you produce and sell.
  • You can earn a few hundred euros a month as a side job if you regularly have a stall at markets or run your own Etsy shop or online shop.
  • Professional ceramic artists with their own workshops, loyal customers, and courses can certainly make a living from their work. Besides selling ceramic pieces, pottery classes are an important source of income, as many people want to try their hand at the craft.

The bottom line is that you don't usually get rich as a potter, but you can build a solid income if you combine creativity, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit.

What basic tools should I get at the beginning?

To get started with pottery, a small starter set is perfectly sufficient. This includes:

  • Cutting wire to cut clay blocks or remove pieces from the table
  • Wooden or metal tools to shape the clay
  • Loop tools that allow you to remove excess clay
  • Needle tool, ideal for carving patterns or testing wall thickness
  • Sponge to smooth the surface and regulate moisture

With this basic set, you can already tackle a wide variety of projects. Later, you can expand your equipment with special tools, a potter's wheel, and glazes.

Do you have any tips on where I can store my pottery equipment if there's no space in my apartment?

Idea: Use a basement, storage room, balcony with a weatherproof box, or an affordable self-storage facility. Stackable boxes also help to store everything compactly.

Also great if your house has a garden: a mini-garage, e.g., a walker or wheelchair garage. Take a look at the websites of Deutsche Rollatorgaragen or Rollator Experten – their models are weatherproof, ventilated, and lockable.

How long does it take to complete a piece of pottery?

The duration depends heavily on the technique and the material. With air-drying clay, you need to let your piece dry for at least 24 to 72 hours before you can paint or further work on it. When working with a kiln, the process takes considerably longer: First, the piece dries slowly in the air (several days to a week, depending on the size). This is usually followed by two firings – the bisque firing and the glaze firing. In total, it can easily take 1–2 weeks from the initial shaping to the finished ceramic piece. Patience is therefore essential in pottery – but you will be rewarded with unique and long-lasting results.
