Many studios belong to several categories at once – a studio can offer classes and sell its own pieces. In these cases you will see several tags next to each other. Within each district, the places are listed alphabetically, and we deliberately do not rank them. Every entry in our selection has its own character, its own size and its own strengths.

As a child she already experimented with clay in her grandparents’ workshop. Originally trained as a costume designer, she eventually turned her passion for material, form and design into a ceramics career of her own: a long-time hobby became a professional studio. Besides selling her own handmade pieces, there are courses for anyone who wants to work with clay themselves. In recent years, the central north of Berlin has developed into a second hotspot of the ceramics scene. Around the “Afrikanisches Viertel” (African Quarter) in Wedding (Kameruner Straße, Togostraße and Lüderitzstraße), a real arts and crafts cluster has formed over the years, with several pottery studios and workshops working door to door. In addition, Moabit and Wedding have large, professionally equipped workshops that also offer memberships and open studio time to experienced potters, as well as small, very personally run studios.

How to find the right pottery course for you

There is a lot to choose from. So that you don't book the first course you see and then find that the format doesn't suit you, here are a few pointers from our experience with course participants and studios.

For an overview of current dates from selected studios, including workshops in Berlin, see our page Pottery Classes and Ceramics Workshops. There you can request a spot directly, with no obligation.

Question 1: Pottery wheel or hand building?
This is the most important decision to make up front. The pottery wheel is fascinating but technically more demanding – the first few sessions often consist of nothing but learning to center. Hand building (slab building, coil building, pinch pot technique) gets you a finished piece faster and is more meditative. Many studios offer both, and some specialize.

Question 2: One-off workshop or multi-session course?
A trial workshop usually lasts 2–3 hours and gives you a first feel for clay. A multi-session course (e.g. two sessions: making + glazing) makes more sense if you really want to take something home. Only in the second session do you glaze your own pieces yourself.

Question 3: Small group or larger studio?
Smaller groups (3–5 people) mean more personal guidance and a calmer atmosphere. Larger studios (8+ people) are often livelier, but sometimes more hectic too. Both have their appeal.

Question 4: What does it cost?
Trial courses in Berlin usually cost between €55 and €99, longer workshops with glazing between €85 and €150. Materials and firing costs are sometimes included and sometimes extra (€5–10 per piece).

Question 5: What happens after the course?
Once you have worked with clay, you often want to keep going. Many studios offer open studio spots where you can work independently after completing an introductory course (usually €20–45 per session, sometimes including material and firing). Ask before booking whether this option exists.

If you really get hooked and think about continuing at home someday, you will find everything you need to get started in our shop – from clay and kilns to the right tools. You will find an overview of the most important purchases in our article How Much Does Pottery Cost as a Hobby?

FAQ: Pottery studios in Berlin

How much does a pottery course in Berlin cost?
Trial courses usually start at €55–65 and last 2–3 hours. Multi-session workshops with glazing and firing service cost between €85 and €150. Specialty courses (porcelain, raku, sculpture) are generally more expensive.

How quickly do pottery courses in Berlin book up?
Popular studios are often booked 1–3 months in advance, especially weekend trial courses. If you are flexible (weekday courses, smaller studios), you can usually find a spot at short notice too.

Do I need prior experience?
For most beginner courses: no. For open studio spots, usually yes – you generally need to have completed at least one introductory course at the same studio beforehand.

How do I pick up my pieces?
After the course, your pieces are stored to dry, bisque fired, glazed and fired again – this takes 2–4 weeks in total. Most studios have fixed pickup days.

Can I just work in an open studio without taking a course?
In theory yes, in practice almost never. Nearly all open studios require that you have basic experience with clay. Some studios offer short introductory sessions that count as a prerequisite.

Where can I get clay, glazes and tools in Berlin?
Classic specialist retailers on site are Börkey Keratech (Wilmersdorf) and the ceramics shop of Hobbyshop Rüther (Schöneberg). Online and with personal advice, you can get clay, glazes, tools and kilns from us in the Formwerk Töpferbedarf Berlin Shop.

Where can I have my pieces fired if I don't have a kiln?
Several studios offer an external firing service, such as Ceramic Kingdom (Neukölln), Clayers Collective (Wedding) and P. & C. Studio Ceramics (Moabit). Hobbyshop Rüther also has a firing and glazing service. Check the guidelines on clay type and firing temperature beforehand.

Which studios are suitable for visitors to Berlin?
Many studios offer their courses in two languages. Particularly recommended for English-speaking visitors are Good Clay Sunshine (Neukölln), Ceramic Kingdom (Neukölln) and Barsega Studio (Friedrichshain), among others.

Conclusion: A scene on the rise

Anyone scrolling through this overview will quickly see that pottery in Berlin is no longer a niche hobby. From the backyard studio in Prenzlauer Berg to the international large-scale workshop in Neukölln, from the wheel-throwing course in Charlottenburg and free-form making in Kreuzberg to the clay shop in Wilmersdorf – the Berlin ceramics scene is as diverse as the city itself.

And it keeps growing. While we write this overview, two new studios are probably opening somewhere between Wedding and Treptow right now. That is exactly why we see this article as a map in progress – an invitation to the entire scene to show itself. If you run a pottery studio, a ceramics workshop or a pottery supply business in Berlin and are not listed yet: we would love to hear from you. The scene map thrives on completeness and on our knowing and connecting the Berlin workshops.

We at Formwerk Töpferbedarf Berlin work with some of these studios – we supply kilns, clay, glazes and tools, advise on purchases and know the quirks of the Berlin workshop scene firsthand. If you are getting into pottery yourself and need materials, we are happy to help.
